Canada has introduced a new digital nomad strategy (Visa) that aims to attract talented individuals from around the world to Canada. Under this initiative, foreign workers are allowed to stay in the country for a period of up to six months.

In Southeast Asia, there are 3 countries that offer nomad visa are Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. These visas allow people who work remotely to live and work in a country for a specified period of time, typically one year. The rise of digital nomads is one of the most significant trends in the world of work. So what is a nomad visa, how is it beneficial and what are the challenges that might occur when following this trend?

What is Digital Nomad?

A digital nomad is a person who works remotely and travels frequently. They are able to work from anywhere in the world with an internet connection, and they often take advantage of this freedom to explore different cultures and locations. Digital nomads typically work in the tech industry, but there are many other professions that are compatible with this lifestyle.

The rise of digital nomads

There are a number of factors that have contributed to the rise of digital nomads. One factor is the increasing availability of high-speed internet, which allows people to work from anywhere with an internet connection. Another factor is the growth of the gig economy, which has created more opportunities for people to work freelance or contract jobs.

The rise of digital nomads has had a number of impacts on the way we work. For one, it has made it possible for people to live and work in different countries, which can lead to a more diverse and global workforce. Additionally, it has given people more freedom and flexibility in their work, which can lead to a better work-life balance.

Challenges

However, there are also some challenges associated with being a digital nomad. One challenge is that it can be difficult to stay connected with colleagues and clients when you are constantly on the move. Additionally, it can be challenging to find affordable housing and workspace in some countries. Despite the challenges, the rise of digital nomads is a positive trend that is having a number of benefits for both individuals and businesses. For individuals, it can offer a more flexible and fulfilling work-life balance, suitable for creative jobs. For businesses, it can provide access to a wider pool of talent and help to reduce costs.

As the trend of digital nomadism continues to grow, it is likely to have an even greater impact on the way we work. Businesses will need to adapt to the changing needs of their employees, and governments will need to create policies that support the growing number of digital nomads as Canada recently.

Indonesia has recently announced that it will be revoking visa-free entry for all countries except for those belonging to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) comprising Brunei, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, and Timor Leste. This means that citizens of 159 countries and territories who were previously eligible for visa-free entry will now have to apply for a visa before traveling to Indonesia.

The decision to halt visa-free entries was issued by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and is now in effect. According to the ministry, the suspension aims to mitigate potential risks associated with individuals entering the country without proper scrutiny and documentation.

Intra-ASEAN travel, however, continues to remain visa-free. Visitors from any ASEAN country can stay in Indonesia for up to 30 days with a confirmed return ticket. To extend their stay, these visitors can choose from the types of immigration visas that Indonesia offers, such as e-VOA (Electronic Visa on Arrival), Visit Visa, or Limited Stay Visa.

The reason behind this suspension is to address concerns about public order disruptions and the potential transmission of diseases from countries that aren’t certified as disease-free by the World Health Organization (WHO). Thus, the number of policy recipients has been reset to accommodate the same.

This change in policy is likely to have an impact on tourism in Indonesia. It remains to be seen how travelers from non-ASEAN countries will respond to the new visa requirements.

Indonesia is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, rich culture, and diverse wildlife. The country has been working hard to promote tourism and attract visitors from around the world. The decision to revoke visa-free entry for non-ASEAN countries may be seen as a step back in this regard.

However, it is important to note that this decision was made with the safety and security of both visitors and residents in mind. The Indonesian government has a responsibility to ensure that individuals entering the country are properly vetted and pose no threat to public order or health.

It is also worth mentioning that this suspension is not permanent. It is possible that visa-free entry will be reinstated for non-ASEAN countries once concerns about public order and disease transmission have been addressed.

In conclusion, Indonesia’s decision to revoke visa-free entry for non-ASEAN countries may have an impact on tourism in the short term. However, it is a necessary measure taken with the safety and security of both visitors and residents in mind.

The National Assembly has officially passed a bill amending and supplementing several provisions of the Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese Citizens and the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam. A notable change is that the duration of electronic visas (eVisas) will be extended from 30 to 90 days. The law also allows citizens of countries unilaterally exempted from visas by Vietnam to be granted temporary residence for 45 days (previously 15 days) and to be considered for visa issuance and temporary residence extension according to regulations.

Unlimited Entry and Exit

The law will take effect on August 15th and the government will decide on the list of countries and territories whose citizens are eligible for eVisas and the list of international border gates that allow foreigners to enter and exit with eVisas. After being granted an electronic visa, foreigners can enter and exit an unlimited number of times within 90 days without having to apply for a new visa.

The new information on visas and electronic visas immediately brought a breath of fresh air to the tourism industry. Previously, experts and tourism businesses had repeatedly proposed extending the temporary residence period for foreigners exempt from visas, instead of just 15 days as currently. While countries in the region such as Thailand and Singapore apply visa exemption policies with temporary residence periods of up to 45 days and 90 days, respectively. The extension of the unilateral visa exemption period to 45 days will help improve Vietnam’s competitiveness in attracting tourists, allowing them to plan their sightseeing and relaxation schedules more flexibly.

The new regulations also contribute to promoting the effectiveness of exit and entry management and creating more favorable conditions for Vietnamese citizens and foreigners. With simple, convenient procedures, foreigners do not have to go to Vietnamese representative offices abroad or apply for a visa through intermediaries…

The government previously announced that Vietnam would consider offering visa-free stays to citizens of more countries in order to attract international tourists. However, no official decision has been made yet.

Currently, Vietnam allows visa waivers for citizens of 25 countries. In comparison, Malaysia and Singapore allow visa waivers for 162 countries, the Philippines for 157 countries, and Thailand for 65 countries.

In the first five months of this year, Vietnam welcomed 4.6 million foreign visitors. This is more than half of the year’s target of eight million visitors but still only 63% of the number of visitors before the pandemic.

Thailand is taking steps to boost its tourism industry by shortening the visa approval period for Chinese tourists, Thailand’s largest source market which took 20% of total international visitors in 2019. The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) has urged the Department of Consular Affairs to reduce the visa approval period from up to 15 working days to less than seven days. This move is expected to facilitate tour groups from China that wish to visit Thailand.

Before the Covid-19 outbreak, it took only 3-5 working days to approve Chinese tourists’ visas. However, the current approval period is considered too long and has been a hindrance to the growth of the tourism industry. In response, Thai authorities have announced that they will shorten the entry visa approval period for Chinese tourists.

The Consular Department of Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs will work together with the country’s embassy and consulates in China to optimize entry visa approval procedures. The goal is to ensure that Chinese tourists can get an entry visa within a week.

Thailand has issued a series of policies to facilitate visa approval. For instance, one-stop visa services have been introduced for teams planning to film in the country. The country also plans to improve its electronic visa system by providing multi-language services and data sharing among its different departments. This will ensure safe and fast entry visa approval.

Currently, the electronic visa system can handle five million applications each year. However, starting from 2024, it will be able to handle 15 million applications. This move is expected to boost the number of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand.

Thailand aims to meet the goal set by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) of welcoming 5 million Chinese tourists by the end of this year. A short visa application period would also help last-minute tour buyers make a decision to visit Thailand.

The ATTA believes that an overhaul in the visa application period will help boost the number of Chinese tourists in the second half of the year. The association estimates that an average of 600,000 Chinese tourists will visit Thailand per month from June onward. This translates to 3.6 million people for the remainder of the year, enabling Thailand to get closer to its 5-million target.
