According to the National Travel and Tourism Office’s latest data, international traveler spending in the U.S. reached its highest monthly level since the pandemic began in February 2020. In May, international travelers spent over $17.5 billion on travel and tourism-related activities within the U.S., a 26% increase from May 2022.

From January to May, international traveler spending totaled $84.7 billion, a 41% increase from 2022. On average, international travelers are now contributing around $561 million per day to the U.S. economy.

Spending on lodging, food, recreation, and other travel and tourism-related goods and services amounted to $9.7 billion, up from $7.2 billion in May 2022.

In May, Americans traveling abroad spent around $17 billion. Combined with total international traveler spending, this gives the U.S. a travel trade surplus of $530 million.

]]> According to the National Travel and Tourism Office, more than 5.2 million international visitors came to the U.S. in March, up 62% compared to March 2022. This represents 83% of the pre-pandemic level of international visitor volume in March 2019.

In March, the top overseas markets for international visitors to the U.S. were the UK, Germany, Japan, South Korea, and India. Through the first three months of 2023, the U.S. welcomed 14 million international visitors, up 77% from the same period last year and 83% of its pre-Covid level.

Total international visitors with a visa for “pleasure” – i.e. tourism – was 1.8 million in March, up from 1.1 million in March 2022, but down from 2.2 million in March 2019.

The recovery in international tourism to the U.S. is also reflected in Americans’ outbound travel. About 7.8 million visitors in March traveled abroad, up 34% from last year and 93% of that month’s pre-pandemic level.

Mexico was the most visited country for Americans in March, with 3.1 million visitors. The Caribbean was the top region, with 2.7 million visitors, followed by Europe with 1.4 million visitors.
Overall, the recovery in international tourism to the U.S. is well underway and expected to continue in the coming months.
