Japanese solo travelers have become one of the most distinctive segments within Japan’s outbound travel market. New findings from Asia Outbound Traveler Profiles 2026: Northeast Asia Edition, powered by Outbox’s Asia Travel Sentiment (ATS) platform, show that 24% of Japanese outbound travelers now plan to travel alone—the highest incidence among Northeast Asia’s major source markets. By comparison, the regional average stands at 13%, followed by South Korea at 11% and China at just 8%. Put simply, Japanese travelers are nearly twice as likely to travel alone as the average Northeast Asian traveler and roughly three times more likely than their Chinese counterparts.

Building on that broader industry context, this article examines what defines today’s Japanese solo traveler—from trip frequency and travel style to accommodation preferences, spending habits, and regional travel preferences. Together, these insights reveal what destinations, tourism boards, hotels, airlines, and travel brands need to understand to better engage one of Asia’s most independent outbound travel segments.

Taken together, these behaviors describe travelers who appear to optimize for convenience rather than extravagance. They travel often enough to become experienced decision-makers, organize trips on their own terms, and allocate budgets carefully across multiple international journeys throughout the year.

Winning this market may depend less on premium positioning and more on delivering a frictionless travel experience—competitive air connectivity, convenient locations, transparent pricing, reliable accommodation, and flexible booking options that support independent trip planning.

For destinations, tourism boards, hotels, airlines, and travel brands, these behavioral patterns matter because they describe a traveler who cannot be won over with generic messaging alone. This is a market that rewards specificity: clear value propositions, dependable service, and marketing that speaks directly to the realities of traveling alone. As Japan’s outbound travel market continues to grow, the destinations and brands that understand these nuances, rather than treating solo travelers as an afterthought within broader tourism strategy, will be best positioned to capture this influential and expanding segment.

This is a significant change from 2019, when Thailand welcomed 1.88 million tourists from Japan and 1.78 million travelers from South Korea. In that year, 1.3 million Thai tourists traveled to Japan.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor Yuthasak Supasorn said the slow outbound Japan market was largely due to the sluggish Japanese economy, particularly the weak yen, which is discouraging people from spending money abroad.

However, he said that as Japan had only just ended its border control measures on May 8, this also contributed to a sluggish flow of tourists as many wanted to avoid the complicated procedures, especially those who had not been vaccinated.

“The overall number of outbound Japanese shrank. Not only Thailand felt the impact. Meanwhile, as Japan has been the favourite destination of Thai tourists, when the borders were reopened and their spending power became more valuable due to the currency situation, Thailand saw a tourism deficit for the first time,” he said.

Mr Yuthasak said that TAT is planning to hold Thailand festivals in four cities in four continents: New York, Barcelona, Osaka, and Sydney. The agency is also preparing to open two new offices in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, and the US city of Chicago.

“We hope to increase market share to 15% when the market recovers, which hopefully will start to see a strong resumption during the holiday period in August,” he said.

In the meantime, TAT is holding the Amazing Thailand Fest 2023 in Osaka to maintain awareness among tourists by promoting Thai soft power through traditional events such as the Loy Krathong Festival. The agency is also targeting younger tourists by bringing two famous Thai artists from the “Boys Love” TV series to this festival to help create new exposure to Thailand.

In August, the agency will invite media from Japan to inspect new tourism products in Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Phetchaburi, and Samut Songkram.

Mr Yuthasak said that TAT is confident that Thailand will be able to recover its tourism industry in the near future.

“We have a lot of good products to offer tourists, and we are confident that we can attract them back to Thailand,” he said.

The Japanese government is trying to attract wealthy tourists to the country by implementing several initiatives.

Although accounting for only 0.9% of the total number of tourists to Japan in 2019, the super-rich foreign travelers contributed up to 11.5% of the total spending of international tourists in the country. Therefore, in order to attract more and more wealthy tourists, and encourage them to visit the country more often, the Japanese government has launched a series of initiatives to compete with other popular destinations for wealthy travelers in Asia like Singapore or Dubai,…

One of the latest initiatives is the reduction of administrative procedures, by cutting the red tape which deters last-minute arrivals of private jets and superyachts. According to Japan’s Transport Ministry, foreign-registered private jets can send notices within three days of landing, instead of 10 days like before. In addition, the Ministry will also implement an emergency landing registration system within 24 hours for special situations.

The Japanese government says the simplification of airport vehicle control regulations, especially for foreign private jets, is part of an overall effort to attract tourists and boost spending. Meanwhile, tour operators say the new initiative could attract the super-rich from across the Asia-Pacific region to Japan.

The high-end tourism sector in Japan is booming with a series of ultra-luxury hotels having opened, such as Bvlgari in Tokyo or Sowaka in Kyoto. However, Japan still does not have much tourism infrastructure that can meet the needs of super-rich foreign travelers, such as luxury airport lounges, concierge services, transportation services, which is familiar in tourist paradises such as Monaco, Dubai or Aspen (USA).

As a result, the Japanese government is working with local agencies to strengthen security regulations, amenities and services for international passengers. This includes improving airport infrastructure, training staff and improving service quality. Moreover, the Japanese government has also promoted cooperation with international airlines to create new direct routes to Japan from important destinations around the world in order to reduce travel time and attract more tourists to this country.

The simplification of the landing regulations for foreign private jets is an important step by the Japanese government in promoting the tourism industry and strengthening international relations. This not only creates favorable conditions for international visitors, but also contributes to the economic development of the country after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite welcoming many Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese visitors, Vietnam has not really left any great footprints to them. We need to solve this issue quickly to reach the target of 8 million foreign visitors this year.

Context

South Korea, Japan and Taiwan are key markets of Vietnam’s tourism in recent years. These three markets accounted for 34.3% of total international arrivals to Vietnam in 2019. Looking at this number, most will think that the larger the number of visitors, the more visitors know about Vietnam. In fact, from the survey results “Tourism behavior of three markets in Northeast Asia” by The Outbox Company, the awareness level of Vietnamese destination image is quite low, just 4.1/7 points.

The awareness level is very important as it will influence tourists’ decision to choose a destination. Although the number of visitors to Vietnam grows every year, the awareness level of visitors from these three markets has not really corresponded to the growth potential.

In 2019 alone, the number of visitors from South Korea accounted for 23.9%. The number is huge, but in fact, most don’t know much about Vietnam. Only 18% of respondents were confident about their perception of the Vietnamese destination image.

Japan is also a potential market, but the majority of tourists (62%) admitted to being relatively knowledgeable and up to 21% have little or no awareness of Vietnam.

Similar to Japan, 21% of Taiwanese visitors have low awareness and nearly two-thirds (63%) think that their understanding of Vietnam is only average – quite good.

How to be more fascinating?

We can say that Vietnam’s tourism is facing difficulties in accessing and promoting its images to tourists from the three markets mentioned above. Though there are many scenic spots, diverse culture, heroic history and many tourism advantages, the stimulus programs and tourism products offered do not seem to really reach and help tourists to know about Vietnam. This partly explains why tourists’ awareness of the destination is not high.

Besides, with the low awareness level, it is uncertain that new visitors will consider choosing Vietnam as their next destination. Therefore, we need to change our approach or offer more diverse promotion programs to attract tourists, taking full advantage of domestic tourism in terms of geographical distance, number of flight routes, beautiful natural scenery, and more.

In order to further understand and satisfy visitors from key markets, businesses and destinations should conduct market research. From there, they can make the most detailed and relevant decisions to not only attract but also keep them coming back again and again.
